Privacy Policy
Perkins is built local-first and private by default. The short version: we run no server for your writing, we have no account system, and your manuscript never passes through us. This policy explains, precisely, what data moves where.
1. The application: what stays on your machine
Everything, by default. Your projects, including prose, notes, metadata, world bible, and editorial history, are plain files in a folder you choose on your own computer. Perkins has no login, collects no telemetry on your writing, and transmits nothing about your prose to us. API keys are stored in your operating system's keychain, never in files.
2. The application: the only things that leave your machine, and where they go
- To the AI provider you configure. When you run an editorial review or assisted action, the relevant text is sent to the provider you chose (e.g., a cloud model on your own API key, or nowhere at all if you use a local model). That transfer is governed by your provider's privacy policy, not ours. You choose the provider; you can choose none.
- To your own git remote. If you connect one (e.g., your GitHub repository), your project syncs there under your account and that service's policies.
- To Google Drive. Only when you explicitly share a selection, using your own Google account, under Google's policies.
- To Paddle, our merchant of record. When you buy or activate a license, we send your license key and a privacy-preserving machine identifier (a salted hash of hardware identifiers; the raw identifiers never leave your machine), plus periodic license revalidation. Payment details are collected by Paddle at checkout under Paddle's Privacy Policy; we never see your card number.
- Update checks. The app periodically fetches a release feed to offer signed updates; like any web request, this exposes your IP address to the hosting provider. No personal data is sent with it.
3. The website
This website is a static page. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs (IP address, user agent, pages requested) for security and operations. With your consent, we use Google Analytics to understand aggregate, anonymous traffic patterns (such as which pages are visited and general geographic region). Google Analytics loads only after you choose Accept on our cookie banner; if you decline, or make no choice, no analytics run and no cookies are set. Your choice is stored on your device and can be changed by clearing this site's data in your browser. When enabled, Google Analytics processes this data under Google's privacy terms with IP anonymization on; the information is used only to improve the website and is never combined with anything from the Perkins application, which has no analytics at all. Checkout is provided by Paddle and governed by Paddle's policies.
4. What we don't do
We do not sell personal data. We do not build advertising profiles. We do not read, store, or train on your writing. We never have it.
5. Data retention and your rights
Because we hold almost nothing, there is little to retain: purchase and license records are maintained by Paddle as merchant of record; support correspondence is kept as long as needed to help you. Depending on where you live (including the EU/EEA, UK, and California), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port personal data. For purchase records, contact Paddle; for anything held by us (e.g., support emails), contact support@perkinsapp.com and we will honor applicable rights.
6. Children
Perkins is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
7. Changes
If our practices change, this page will be updated with a new effective date, and material changes will be noted in release notes.
